Overview
Keycloak supports two types of OAuth2 clients:
- Public clients: For browser-based SPAs using PKCE flow
- Confidential clients: For server-side applications using client credentials flow
This skill focuses on confidential clients for service-to-service authentication.
Key Configuration
Required Settings for Client Credentials Flow

Critical: serviceAccountsEnabled: True is REQUIRED for the client credentials grant type. Without this, the token endpoint will reject requests with invalid_grant.
Python Script Pattern
Use the python-keycloak library:

When creating secrets in other namespaces, you need cross-namespace RoleBindings:

SSL Certificate Handling
Option 1: Use Internal Keycloak URL (Recommended)
Avoid TLS complexity by using the internal service URL:
http://keycloak-service.keycloak.svc.cluster.local:8080
Option 2: Use OpenShift Trusted CA Bundle
Mount the pre-existing CA bundle:

Troubleshooting
Error: invalid_grant
- Ensure
serviceAccountsEnabled: Trueis set on the client - Check that the client secret is correct
Error: SSL certificate problem
- Use internal Keycloak URL to avoid TLS issues
- Or mount the trusted CA bundle
Error: Access denied
- Check RoleBinding is in the correct namespace
- Verify service account name matches
