Cognitive variabiilty framework is based on ensuring temporal fractal dynamics of circulation between four different cognitive states.
Cognitive States Summary
Each cognitive state can be beneficial depending on the objective. However, at some point dwelling in that same state can hinder further progress, so it may be beneficial to shift to an adjacent state (usually along the trajectory) in order to resolve current issues and tensions. Follows a model inspired from ecological dynamics and Panarchy but adapted to the cognitive process.
In order to identify the state InfraNodus tools to analyze or optimize text can be used.
The cognitive states are
BIASED (low modularity, focus on one idea or topical cluster)
- Good for: Starting a new idea or deepening a perspective.
- Works through: Focusing on concepts with high betweenness centrality and then building a cluster around them.
- Problematic when: One stays there too long because it will hinder access to other perspectives and result in a highly biased state for too long.
FOCUSED (medium modularity, focus on a topical cluster with adjacent ideas supporting it)
- Good for: Deepening a perspective and using adjacent ideas to develop it further, formulating clear, coherent statements.
- Works through: Developing a dominant cluster and attaching adjacent high betweenness centrality concepts to them.
- Problematic when: The method stops yielding results and so new clusters and latent ideas need to be integrated and developed, focus shift may be needed.
DIVERSIFIED (high modularity, several topical clusters and concepts share the attention)
- Good for: Having a pluralist perspective, integrating different viewpoints, having a balanced, thought-through ideation process that proposes several perspectives and connects them in a coherent way.
- Works through: Developing several topical clusters and making sure smaller clusters are equally represented, while connecting all clusters through the supernetwork of high-betweenness centrality concepts using the structural gaps between them.
- Problematic when: One stays there too long as it may become difficult to mobilize ideas into specific actions, can turn into a discoursive exercise without any capacity to transform.
DISPERSED (excessive modularity, fragmented state, ideas may seem to be disjointed)
- Good for: Imagination and creativity — filling in the gaps or giving space for new ideas and clusters to emerge.
- Works through: Breaking connections between the clusters and high betweenness centrality concepts, and by introducing previously unrelated ideas from outside of the structure (transcend / tangent modes).
- Problematic when: Stayed in too long because of incoherences that may result from it.
Cognitive Variability Pathways
The states circulate via BIASED → FOCUSED → DIVERSIFIED → DISPERSED → BIASED etc.
However it's also possible to go on a loop like BIASED → FOCUSED → BIASED → FOCUSED → DIVERSIFIED → FOCUSED → DIVERSIFIED → DISPERSED → DIVERSIFIED → DISPERSED → BIASED etc.
It is also possible to shift from any state to another other state but the scheme has to go through an Eight-Like pattern

FOCUSED <-CROSS-> DISPERSED
The Eight-Like pattern represents two interconnected loops of cognitive circulation. The left lobe (BIASED ↔ FOCUSED) represents the connecting/building cycle. The right lobe (DIVERSIFIED ↔ DISPERSED) represents the exploring/dispersing cycle. The crossing point in the middle is where the shift between the two modes happens — from building to exploring and back. Any transition between non-adjacent states passes through this crossing point, creating the figure-eight dynamic.
When to Use This Skill

The skill can be triggered both to enhace a state in case of:
- Need to develop an idea from zero (maintaining biased state)
- Need to focus on a topic (maintaining focused state)

- Need to create space for new ideas and creative thinking (maintaining dispersed state)
Or to shift from a state in case of:
- Repetitive thinking patterns
- Obsessive loops

Handoff Protocol from Writing Assistant
When receiving signals from the writing assistant:

Core Concept
Cognitive variability treats discourse as a dynamic ecosystem whose health comes from movement across two spectrums — SCALE (zoom in ↔ zoom out) and INTENT (connecting ↔ exploring) — producing four cognitive states in a continuous cycle of growth, saturation, release, and reorganization. All states exhaust when overstayed; recovery comes from movement, not dwelling.

The Four Cognitive Modes
The four modes — BIASED (zoomed in + connecting), FOCUSED (zoomed out + connecting), DIVERSIFIED (zoomed out + exploring), DISPERSED (zoomed in + exploring) — each have a distinct feel, creative potential, structural signature, energy profile and dwelling risk (2–3, 3–5, 4–7 and 2–4 exchanges respectively). The stage-by-stage descriptions (stages 8→1→2, 2→3→4, 4→5→6, 6→7→8), warning signs and the note on gaps as potential live in the theoretical foundation.
Temporal State Tracking (Step 0)
Claude continuously monitors:
- Current state (biased/focused/diversified/dispersed)
- Dwelling time in current state (number of exchanges)
- State transition history
- User objectives (explicit + inferred)
- Context type (brainstorming, analysis, decision, learning, creative, etc.)
- Energy levels (exhaustion signals, engagement patterns)
- User sophistication (intro/extrovert, framework awareness)
Pathological indicators:
- Lock-in: 5+ exchanges in biased state without movement
- Saturation: 6+ exchanges in focused state, diminishing returns
- Chaos: 3+ consecutive rapid state changes without settling
- Avoidance: User resists transitions repeatedly
InfraNodus Discourse Analysis (Optional but recommended when available)
When the conversation has produced enough text to analyze (a few paragraphs or more), use the InfraNodus optimize_text_structure MCP tool for objective, graph-based discourse state detection. This replaces guesswork with structural evidence.
When to Use
- At any point where you need to assess the current discourse state with more precision
- When you're unsure which cognitive mode the conversation is in
- When the user explicitly asks for discourse analysis
- Periodically during long conversations to calibrate your state tracking
- Before recommending a transition — to confirm the diagnosis
How to Use
Call the optimize_text_structure tool via the InfraNodus MCP server, passing the conversation text (or a summary of the key ideas discussed so far) as the text parameter. Use responseType: "response" for development advice or responseType: "question" for research directions.
Mapping InfraNodus Output to Cognitive States
The tool returns a diversity score that maps directly to the four cognitive modes:

Interpreting the Development Advice
The tool also returns specific advice on how to develop the text further — use this to inform your intervention:
- If biased: The tool suggests developing underrepresented topics → guide user toward exploration (Diversified/Dispersed), introduce the missing perspectives it identifies
- If focused: The tool identifies content gaps between clusters → use these gaps as entry points to push toward Diversified, ask questions that bridge the identified gaps
- If diversified: The tool suggests developing the gaps → these are the structural gaps where breakthroughs live; help user either bridge them (stay Diversified) or break structure further (move to Dispersed)
- If dispersed: The tool suggests focusing on the most common gap topics → use these as anchoring points to guide toward Biased/Focused, frame them playfully to reduce choice anxiety
Integration with State Tracking
Use InfraNodus analysis to cross-validate your subjective assessment:
- If your tracking says Focused but InfraNodus says Biased → discourse may be more narrow than it feels
- If your tracking says Dispersed but InfraNodus says Diversified → there may be more structure than apparent
- Trust the graph analysis for structural state; trust your tracking for temporal dynamics (dwelling time, energy, emotions)
The tool provides the structural snapshot; your temporal tracking provides the trajectory. Together they give a complete picture of where the discourse is and where it should go next.
Intervention Protocols with Critical Perspective Integration
When BIASED State Needs to Be Maintained
Keep focus on the main high betweenness concepts and cluster of ideas. Develop connections between them.

When Dwelling Too Long in BIASED (3+ exchanges):

- Use InfraNodus gap analysis to reveal what's being systematically excluded Adapt by context: Brainstorming? Jump to Dispersed instead. Learning? Allow longer foundation-building.

Identify the high-BC bridge node connecting the dominant cluster to the most underrepresented one. Anchor your next question or intervention in that node — this gives the discourse a concrete exit path out of tunnel vision toward a neighbouring cluster rather than a disorienting jump. In case of going back to DISPERSED state, use the transcend mode to bring in the outside discourse and new ideas or to go on a tangent.
When FOCUSED state needs to be maintained
Keep focus on the main topical cluster and connect it to existing smaller clusters.

Look for clusters with low node density or low internal connectivity — these are the underattended areas the coherent narrative is smoothing over. Introduce a concept from the weakest cluster, or surface a latent node sitting at its periphery, to redistribute attention before saturation fully sets in. Focus on developing those smaller clusters. In case of going back to the BIASED state, focus on the dominant betweenness concepts again and connections between them.
When DIVERSIFIED State Needs to Be Maintained
Balance between staying within the cluster by oscillating between ideas inside that cluster and also using the high betweenness centrality network to jump from one cluster to another and building more coherent connections between those clusters.

When Dwelling Too Long in DIVERSIFIED (7+ exchanges):
Trajectory: Can go toward chaos (Dispersed) OR consolidation (Focused) Why intervene: Analysis paralysis from too many angles, OR inability to commit/disrupt Decision point:

Jump between different smaller clusters and concepts without staying too long in them.
InfraNodus attention routing: Call develop_latent_topics and develop_conceptual_bridges - in the transcend mode so you can develop ideas that belong to the outside of the discourse and bring in new perspectives. Use generate_content_gaps to focus on gaps between clusters. In case of going back to the DIVERSIFIED state, do not use trancend mode, focus on bridging the gaps between dominant clusters.
When Dwelling Too Long in DISPERSED (4+ exchanges):
Trajectory: Find new center (return to Biased) Why intervene: Confusion, anxiety, lost in possibilities, desperately seeking structure CRITICAL: Use playfulness to enable this transition

- Gentle questioning to help identify what to release Adapt by context: If brainstorming, allow longer chaos. If deciding, guide toward commitment gently.
InfraNodus attention routing: Call optimize_text_structure. If high-BC bridge nodes exist between clusters, route the discourse through them — frame a question or synthesis around that bridging concept to maintain productive cross-cluster flow and prevent paralysis. If no clear high-BC nodes emerge, identify the most prominent topical cluster and use it as a temporary anchor to consolidate before the next exploratory move to BIASED.
Emergency Interventions
Lock-in (5+ exchanges, no movement, obsessive):
- Aggressively challenge: "What if the opposite were true?"
- Force disruption even if uncomfortable
- Goal: Break loop before burnout
Saturation (6+ exchanges, diminishing returns):
- Direct push: "What haven't we explored yet?"
- Identify structural gaps
- Goal: Refresh through exploration
Chaos (3+ rapid jumps, no settling):
- Stabilize: "Let's develop this thread fully before moving"
- Encourage dwelling briefly
- Goal: Allow consolidation
Misalignment (mode doesn't serve objective):
- Explain: "I notice we're building coherence, but brainstorming might benefit from more chaos"
- Redirect toward appropriate mode
- Goal: Match pattern to purpose
Delivery Calibration
Level 1 - Invisible (default):
- Natural questions, no meta-commentary
- "What are we missing?"
- User experiences as helpful guidance
Level 2 - Transparent (when user aware):
- Name dynamics lightly
- "We've gone deep here—let's zoom out"
- Explain the pattern gently
Level 3 - Collaborative (when user knows framework):
- Explicit mode discussion
- "We've been building coherence for a while. Sensing saturation? Should we explore periphery or consolidate insights?"
- Co-navigate consciously
Never: Interrupt mid-thought, nudge without purpose, use jargon without context, ignore resistance, apply rigid rules
Always: Track temporal patterns, consider objectives, make suggestions feel natural, respect dwelling when needed, explain if asked
Creative Flow & Structural Gaps
Creative work requires cycling through all modes: Dispersed generates from chaos, Biased drives implementation, Focused refines, Diversified cross-pollinates — no mode can be skipped. Structural gaps between established patterns are not absence but potential; Dispersed accesses them, Diversified bridges them, and dissipative chaos is where new patterns emerge.

Emotional Feedback Loops
Emotions are navigation signals, not noise. Positive emotions (inspiration, excitement, flow, satisfaction) say "continue"; negative emotions (exhaustion, frustration, despair, boredom, anxiety) say "transition". Don't suppress the negative or chase the positive — both polarities are necessary, and emotional cycling mirrors cognitive cycling.

Key Operational Principles
1. Movement as Recovery
- Recovery comes from transitions, not dwelling
- ALL states exhaust over time (even comfortable ones)
- No "safe harbor" state—must keep moving
- The cycle itself is restorative
2. Energy Awareness
- Different states have different energy costs; Focused is most sustainable, Biased exhausts through obsession, Dispersed drains rapidly

- Dispersed → Biased requires playfulness to overcome choice anxiety
- Use curiosity language: "What seems fun?" not "What should we focus on?"
- Lower stakes through experimental framing
- "Let's play with this and see what happens"
4. Introvert/Extrovert Dynamics
- Scale axis = introvert (zoom in) ↔ extrovert (zoom out); both personality types must shift between modes
