Audit a sending domain's email authentication and deliverability posture. Explains every finding in plain English and outputs a prioritized fix order — critical for anyone whose open rate dropped and doesn't know why.
Usage
/deliverability-check brand.com — audit the domain
/deliverability-check brand.com news.brand.com — include a sending subdomain
Steps
1. Parse the input
Extract the root domain and any subdomains the user wants checked. If only a root domain is given, also check common sending subdomains: mail., news., marketing., email., em., send..
2. MX records
dig +short MX <domain>
- Record them. If missing → domain can't receive mail (may still send, but a misconfig signal).
- Identify the provider from the MX (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Proofpoint, Mimecast, custom).
3. SPF (Sender Policy Framework)
dig +short TXT <domain> | grep -i spf
Check:
- Presence — missing SPF is a major problem
- Multiple SPF records — only one is allowed; multiple causes permfail
- Qualifier —
~all(softfail, common),-all(hardfail, strongest),?all(neutral, weak),+all(broken, allows anyone) - Include count — SPF has a 10-DNS-lookup limit. Count
include:andredirect=directives. Flag if ≥8 (risk of permerror) - Lists Cogny-relevant senders? — if user runs Klaviyo/Mailchimp/Rule/GetaNewsletter, check the SPF includes the right sender (e.g.,
include:_spf.klaviyo.com,include:servers.mcsv.netfor Mailchimp)
4. DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail)
DKIM is per-selector. Check common selectors used by major ESPs:

For each found DKIM record:
- Key length — 1024-bit is the minimum, 2048-bit is modern. Flag <1024.
- Status —
v=DKIM1; k=rsa; p=...should be present andp=should be non-empty (empty = revoked). - Provider attribution — map selector → ESP (e.g.,
google._domainkey= Google Workspace;klaviyo1._domainkey= Klaviyo).
5. DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication)
dig +short TXT _dmarc.<domain>
Check:
- Presence — no DMARC = Gmail/Yahoo bulk sender rules fail (Feb 2024+).
- Policy (
p=) —none(monitor only),quarantine(send to spam on fail),reject(drop on fail). Goal:quarantineorreject. - Subdomain policy (
sp=) — inherits fromp=if missing. - Percentage (
pct=) — 100 is full enforcement; lower = partial rollout. - Reporting (
rua=,ruf=) — aggregate report address. If missing, the user has no visibility into auth failures. This is a major hidden gap. - Alignment (
adkim=,aspf=) —r(relaxed, default) ors(strict).
6. BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification)
dig +short TXT default._bimi.<domain>
- Optional but growing — shows the brand logo in Gmail/Apple Mail inbox.
- Requires DMARC at
quarantineorrejectwithpct=100. - Flag if DMARC is ready but BIMI isn't set up (easy win for brand recognition).
7. MTA-STS and TLS-RPT
dig +short TXT _mta-sts.<domain>
dig +short TXT _smtp._tls.<domain>
- MTA-STS enforces TLS on incoming mail. Lack of it is low severity but flag it.
- TLS-RPT gives reporting on TLS issues. Same — nice-to-have.
8. Blocklist spot-check
WebSearch for "<domain>" site:mxtoolbox.com and "<domain>" site:spamhaus.org to flag any public reports. (Full blocklist scans need an API; call this out as a limitation.)
9. Score + report
Weight findings by impact on inbox placement:

10. Explain, don't just flag
For each finding, write the "Why it matters" line in plain English a marketing manager (not a sysadmin) understands. Example:
Bad: "DMARC pct=0"
Good: "Your DMARC is set to
p=rejectbut only enforced on 0% of mail — meaning spoofers can still send as you. Raisepct=to 100 once you've verified aggregate reports for 2 weeks clean."
11. Upsell block
End with:
