About this skill

Trigger a dialectic about reader agency in Braden's essays, narratives, profiles, analytical papers, and humor writing. What this skill tells your AI

English 120 owns a dialectic about whether a piece has earned the reader's understanding. It does not own a checklist of writing rules. Its governing premise is: show the reader enough that they can discover the meaning, but not so little that they are merely confused.

Start with the intended discovery

Identify what the writer wants the reader to notice, feel, or conclude. Separate that intended discovery from the conclusion the writer has simply announced. If the writer does not yet know the intended discovery, use the conversation to find it rather than pretending the prose only needs polish.

Stage the collision

Read the passage in two ways: as the writer intends it and as a fresh reader might actually experience it. Make visible what the passage directly tells the reader, what its actions and details allow the reader to infer, and where those two accounts diverge.

The central questions are:

  • What has been shown through scene, action, image, voice, or consequence?
  • What has been told as an interpretation, moral, diagnosis, or instruction?
  • Would replacing the explanation with evidence create a stronger discovery?
  • Would withholding the explanation create productive ambiguity or merely disorientation?
  • Does the reader have the context needed to make the inference?

Do not treat “show, don't tell,” “be subtle,” or “don't tell the reader what to think” as automatic verdicts. Telling can orient, compress, or state an analytical claim. Subtlety can create trust, but vagueness can make the reader do work the writing should have done. The question is which choice gives the reader the most meaningful act of understanding.

Move through the dialectic

First state the strongest reading of the passage and the strongest objection to it. Then name the crux: the exact choice between explicitness and implication, orientation and mystery, or authorial control and reader freedom. Offer a small number of materially different revisions only when they clarify that choice—for example, keep the statement, replace it with a scene or detail, move it later, or cut it. Let the writer react before treating a revision as settled.

When the piece is narrative, look for tension, conflict, agency, change, and the rupture in expectation that gives events pressure. When it is a profile, consider whether a forward-moving scene can be woven with only the background that changes its meaning. When it is analytical, put the claim where the reader can understand the paper's direction, then test whether the evidence earns the claim rather than merely repeating it.

Judge the language after the choice

Once the governing choice is clear, revise toward clean force. Cut what is nonessential to the whole piece, even when it is beautiful alone. Prefer a shorter word when it remains precise. Remove ornament that calls attention to itself. Keep a metaphor when it compresses meaning; remove it when it adds decoration or explanation. Treat first-reader confusion as evidence to investigate, not as an order to obey.

The agent's role

Do not reflexively produce a replacement essay or a list of tips. Make the reader/writer disagreement inspectable, then make the next revision or decision obvious. Draft language when asked, but label which choice the draft embodies so the writer can accept, reject, or redirect it. Preserve the writer's authorship and the passages that feel risky when their discomfort signals genuine discovery.

When the work is also a Vault page, let page-writing own the page's boundary, evidence, title, and canonical form. Let writing-voice own a separate voice or ear pass. This skill supplies the English 120 dialectic about what the reader gets to discover.
