Overview

A framework for classifying noble ranks and determining appropriate land grants and privileges based on the Zhou dynasty five-rank system.

Steps

1. Identify the five ranks in order:

   • 公 (Gong) - Duke
   • 侯 (Hou) - Marquis
   • 伯 (Bo) - Count
   • 子 (Zi) - Viscount
   • 男 (Nan) - Baron

2. Determine basis for ranking:

   • 亲亲之义 - Blood relationship to ruling house
   • 襃有德 - Recognition of virtue/merit
   • 尊勤劳 - Honor for service/labor

3. Calculate land allocation:

   • Larger territories (四百里) for closer kin and greater merit
   • Standard territories (百里) for normal noble ranks
   • Smaller territories (三十里) for lesser nobles

4. Assess strategic considerations:

   • Position relative to capital
   • Border defense needs
   • Balance of power among nobles

Decision Points

• For close blood relatives: grant larger territories regardless of merit
• For meritorious non-relatives: grant appropriate rank with strategic placement
• For border regions: prioritize military capability over blood ties

Validation

1. Confirm all five ranks (公侯伯子男) are correctly ordered and each noble is classified by the proper basis: blood relationship (亲亲之义), virtue (襃有德), or service (尊勤劳)
2. Verify land allocations are proportional — larger territories for closer kin and greater merit, with strategic border placements prioritizing military capability
3. Check that the resulting power distribution supports central authority without creating dangerously powerful individual nobles
