Overview

A literary technique using invented characters in conversation to present multiple perspectives and lead readers to a desired conclusion without direct argument.

Structure

  1. Create Representative Characters

    • Design characters representing different viewpoints
    • Example from "Zixu Fu":
      • Zixu (子虚) - "Mr. Empty/Void" - represents Chu perspective
      • Wuyou Xiansheng (乌有先生) - "Mr. Nonexistent" - represents Qi perspective
      • Wushigong (无是公) - "Mr. Nothingness" - represents the imperial/neutral perspective
  2. Establish the Setting

    • Create a plausible context for the conversation
    • Often a gathering or meeting after an event
  3. Present Competing Views

    • Let each character present their position
    • Include exaggeration and pride in each view
    • Build tension between perspectives
  4. Introduce the Resolving Voice

    • Have the most authoritative character deliver the conclusion
    • This character should transcend the earlier biases
    • Present the "correct" view as obvious and natural
  5. End with Moral Instruction

    • Conclude with the lesson to be learned
    • Often framed as returning to proper values (e.g., frugality, propriety)

Advantages

  • Avoids direct criticism of the actual audience
  • Allows exploration of sensitive topics
  • Readers feel they reached conclusions themselves
  • Entertains while instructing

Application Steps

  1. Identify the message you want to convey
  2. Determine the opposing views to address
  3. Create characters to embody each position
  4. Write the dialogue leading to your conclusion
  5. End with clear moral or practical guidance

Expected Outcomes

  • Audience receives criticism without feeling attacked
  • Complex ideas made accessible through narrative
  • Memorable and engaging presentation of arguments

Verification

  • Confirm each fictional character clearly embodies a distinct viewpoint relevant to the target argument
  • Validate that the resolving voice transcends earlier biases and presents the intended conclusion naturally
  • Check that the audience receives the moral instruction without feeling personally attacked or criticized
