About this skill

Use when persuading officials or leaders by aligning your proposal with their self-interest. Demonstrated by Kuai Tong and Li Yiji, this technique researches the target's fears, frames problems objectively, and presents solutions that benefit the listener.

Overview

A diplomatic technique demonstrated by Kuai Tong, Li Yiji, and other strategists in the text. Success comes from showing how your proposal benefits the listener, not yourself.

Core Principle

"The wise person speaks of benefits; the foolish person speaks of righteousness." (智者言利)

Step-by-Step Procedure

1. Research Your Target

  • Identify their current situation and concerns
  • Understand their fears and desires
  • Determine their decision-making authority

2. Establish Credibility

  • Demonstrate knowledge of their circumstances
  • Show you understand their position
  • Avoid appearing self-interested

3. Frame the Problem

  • Describe the situation objectively
  • Highlight dangers they may not see
  • Create urgency without panic

4. Present the Alternative

  • Offer a clear alternative path
  • Explain specific benefits to THEM
  • Show how this addresses their fears

5. Remove Obstacles

  • Anticipate objections
  • Provide solutions to perceived barriers
  • Minimize their risk

6. Create Action Path

  • Give specific next steps
  • Make the first step easy
  • Provide ongoing support

Example from Text: Kuai Tong Persuading Fan Yang Magistrate

  1. Acknowledge danger: "I heard you will die, so I came to mourn."
  2. Explain situation: Qin law is harsh; people hate you
  3. Show opportunity: Now chaos means law won't protect you
  4. Offer solution: Surrender to the rebel army
  5. Demonstrate benefit: You'll be rewarded; people won't kill you

Warning Signs to Avoid

  • Don't appear to benefit personally
  • Don't lecture or moralize
  • Don't create false urgency
  • Don't ignore legitimate concerns

Expected Outcome

  • Target sees proposal as serving their interests
  • Resistance decreases
  • Action becomes more likely

Verification

  1. Confirm that the target's current situation, fears, and desires have been thoroughly researched before the approach.
  2. Validate that the proposal is framed around benefits to the target, not the persuader, in all communications.
  3. Ensure specific, easy first steps have been provided to reduce the target's perceived risk of action.
