Upgrade Remotion

SkillDev tools

The remotion-upgrade skill lets an AI agent upgrade Remotion and its related packages in a project to the latest version. It detects the package manager and workspaces, runs the official upgrade command when available, or manually updates package versions and the lockfile, then verifies the diff. It also refreshes installed Remotion skills.

Then ask your AI: use the Upgrade Remotion skill

Details

Instructions available. Your AI can read the instructions. Execution depends on the setup they require.

Have a project that uses Remotion and its related packages.

What your AI can do with it

  • Detect the package manager and workspaces from project manifests and lockfile
  • Run npx remotion upgrade when @remotion/cli is locally available
  • Manually upgrade remotion and @remotion/* packages to one matching version
  • Align auxiliary packages like zod, mediabunny, and @huggingface/transformers
  • Update the project lockfile using its package manager
  • Refresh installed Remotion skills with npx skills update

Getting started

  1. Have a project that uses Remotion and its related packages.
  2. Make sure the project has a package manager and lockfile the agent can read.
  3. Let the agent inspect the manifests and lockfile to identify the package manager and workspaces.
  4. If @remotion/cli is available, the agent runs npx remotion upgrade; otherwise it updates package versions and the lockfile manually.
  5. Review the manifest and lockfile diff to confirm all Remotion packages use one version.

What this skill tells your AI

The instructions your AI receives, as published by remotion-dev/remotion in packages/codex-plugin/skills/remotion-upgrade/SKILL.md and read by Ahel’s review.

  1. Inspect the project manifests and lockfile to identify the package manager and workspaces. Preserve unrelated changes.

  2. Determine whether @remotion/cli is locally available. If it is, run:

    npx remotion upgrade

This also updates project-local Remotion skills. Skip the manual upgrade below.

  3. If @remotion/cli is not available, upgrade manually:

    • Get the latest stable Remotion version with npm view remotion version.
    • Find every installed remotion and @remotion/* dependency across the project and upgrade them all to that exact version. Preserve their dependency sections and the project's workspace or catalog conventions.
    • Read the @remotion/studio dependencies for the target Remotion version using npm view @remotion/studio@<version> dependencies --json. Align installed auxiliary packages such as zod, mediabunny, and @huggingface/transformers with the versions listed there. Use the mediabunny version for installed @mediabunny/* packages.
    • Run the project's package manager to update its lockfile.
  4. If @remotion/cli is not available, update the installed Remotion skills:

    npx skills update remotion-best-practices remotion-captions remotion-create remotion-docs remotion-interactivity remotion-maps remotion-markup remotion-multimedia remotion-render remotion-saas remotion-studio remotion-upgrade --yes

  5. Review the manifest and lockfile diff. Ensure all Remotion packages use one version and installed auxiliary packages use their recommended versions. If the CLI is available, run npx remotion versions as an additional check.

The Remotion releases contain the changelog and may be useful for summarizing relevant changes after the upgrade.
