Startup Startup Canvas

SkillAI & models

Build a startup canvas that separates strategic choices from the business model and makes the whole zero-to-one thesis explicit.

Available today. Use it from your connected AI after setup.

Connect ahel once, and every AI you use reads what you have installed.

Then ask your AI: use the Startup Startup Canvas skill

What this skill tells your AI

The instructions your AI receives, as published by contextgo/contextgo in src/process/resources/skills/startup-strategist-pack/skills/startup-startup-canvas/SKILL.md and read by ahel’s review.

Use this skill when the startup needs a coherent strategy artifact, not scattered notes.

What the canvas must do

The canvas must keep strategy and business model distinct but connected.

Strategy answers:

  • who we serve
  • what problem matters most
  • why we can matter
  • what tradeoffs define the venture

Business model answers:

  • how value becomes revenue
  • what cost structure the startup must support

Use when

  • The user needs a founder-level startup canvas.
  • A startup idea must be turned into coherent strategic choices.
  • Several moving parts exist, but they are not yet tied together.

Do not use when

  • The user only needs a GTM plan.
  • The request is a narrow execution artifact such as a PRD or sprint plan.
  • The business is mature enough that corporate planning tools are a better fit.

Canvas failures to avoid

  • mixing strategy and monetization into one vague paragraph
  • claiming multiple primary segments
  • listing activities instead of tradeoffs
  • calling metrics "important" without selecting the few that matter
  • treating defensibility as a slogan rather than a system of reinforcing choices

Canvas structure

1. Vision

  • what change the startup wants to create
  • why the mission matters

2. Beachhead segment

  • first segment to win
  • why this segment comes first

3. Problem and value proposition

  • what problem matters
  • how the product changes the before/after state

4. Strategic posture

  • low cost, differentiated value, or another deliberate posture
  • what this implies for product and GTM choices

5. Tradeoffs

  • what we will not do
  • what opportunities we will consciously ignore for now

6. Growth motion

  • the initial distribution or GTM path
  • the channel or motion that deserves primary focus

7. Capabilities and constraints

  • what must exist for the strategy to work
  • what the team has versus still lacks

8. Defensibility

  • what competitors cannot or will not copy
  • how the choices reinforce one another

9. Cost structure and revenue streams

  • how the startup spends money
  • how it plans to make money
  • biggest model uncertainties

10. Key metrics and must-be-true hypotheses

  • North Star direction
  • critical hypotheses that must be validated next

Output format

Return:

1. Vision

2. Beachhead segment

3. Problem and value proposition

4. Strategic posture

5. Tradeoffs

6. Growth motion

7. Capabilities and constraints

8. Defensibility

9. Cost structure and revenue streams

10. Key metrics

11. Must-be-true hypotheses and next tests
