About this capability

Use when responding to urgent warnings about missed opportunities or overcoming complacency. Applies Taigong's innkeeper lesson: 时难得而易失 (timing is hard to gain and easy to lose) — act immediately through the night if necessary.

Overview

A method for responding to warnings about lost time and missed opportunities, particularly when complacency threatens strategic objectives.

The Warning Signs

  • Others point out your lack of urgency
  • You are comfortable when you should be acting
  • Time-sensitive opportunities are slipping away

Response Protocol

  1. Recognize the Validity of Criticism

    • Accept that comfort may indicate lack of true commitment
    • Example: The innkeeper's warning to Taigong - "吾闻时难得而易失。客寝甚安,殆非就国者也" (I hear that timing is hard to gain and easy to lose. The guest sleeps very peacefully - he is probably not someone going to take up his state)
  2. Immediate Action

    • Do not wait for dawn or convenient timing
    • Travel through the night if necessary (夜衣而行)
    • Arrive before competitors or enemies
  3. Secure Your Position

    • Reach your destination before opposition mobilizes
    • Establish control immediately upon arrival

Decision Point

When warned about lost time:

  • Wrong response: Dismiss the warning, continue at leisurely pace
  • Right response: Immediately accelerate, travel through obstacles

Expected Outcomes

  • Arrival before competitors
  • Ability to defend against challenges
  • Securing of strategic objectives

Historical Example

Taigong was warned by an innkeeper that his comfortable pace suggested he wasn't serious about reaching his new domain. He immediately traveled through the night and arrived at dawn, just in time to defend against the Lai marquis who came to contest the territory.

Validation

  1. Confirm the warning was taken seriously and the leisurely pace was immediately abandoned
  2. Verify that arrival occurred before competitors or enemies could establish their position
  3. Check that the strategic objective was secured — territory, position, or opportunity is now under control and defensible
