Overview

Guidelines for proper succession to maintain political stability and legitimacy, based on Fan Zhongshan's counsel to King Xuan.

Core Principle

Succession must follow proper order to maintain legitimacy and prevent rebellion.

Rules

  1. Order of Succession

    • Establish the eldest son as heir (not the younger)
    • "Abolishing the elder to establish the younger goes against proper order"
  2. Consequences of Violation

    • Going against proper order will violate the king's command
    • Violating the king's command requires punishment
    • Creates a dilemma: punish and damage royal authority, or not punish and show commands can be ignored
  3. Chain of Consequences

    • If the order is not followed, the command loses authority
    • If commands lose authority, governance fails
    • If governance fails while going against proper order, the people will abandon their superiors
  4. Teaching Effect

    • The ruler's actions teach the people
    • Establishing a younger son teaches people to go against proper order
    • If other states follow this example, royal commands will be blocked everywhere

Decision Framework

  • Proper order: Younger serves elder, subject serves ruler
  • Violating this teaches rebellion
  • Even if the younger son is more beloved, stability requires following proper order

Expected Outcomes

  • Maintained legitimacy of succession
  • Clear expectations for all parties
  • Reduced risk of rebellion and instability

Validation

  1. Confirm the eldest son is established as heir following proper order — no younger son is favored regardless of personal preference
  2. Verify the chain of consequences is understood: violating order weakens commands, weakened commands undermine governance, failed governance causes abandonment
  3. Check the teaching effect — the ruler's succession decision sets a precedent that other states and subjects will follow, so it must model proper order
