Tips

  • Drive continuous dialog, not annual tick-box reviews. Quarterly check-ins and real-time feedback prevent surprises, improve goal responsiveness, and produce far richer evidence for annual performance assessments.
  • Separate performance reviews from compensation discussions. Combining rating delivery with salary decisions shifts employee focus away from feedback and development onto financial outcomes. Hold evaluation and compensation meetings separately.
  • Support ratings with objective behavioral evidence. Require concrete metrics, project deliverables, and specific behavioral examples to support ratings. This minimizes manager bias, subjective evaluations, and potential dispute claims.
  • Calibrate across teams before finalizing ratings. Conduct calibration sessions with peer managers to align rating standards across departments, mitigate lenient or harsh grading tendencies, and maintain organizational fairness.
  • Establish clear, time-bound PIP milestones. Performance Improvement Plans must detail specific gap areas, expected outcomes, support resources, and 30/60/90-day evaluation checkpoints to provide genuinely supportive remediation.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation across all performance stages — informal feedback and verbal warnings lack legal standing in strict labor law jurisdictions like Vietnam.
