remotion-studio

SkillMedia

The remotion-studio skill lets an AI agent start Remotion Studio, a local web app that shows a live preview of a video project built with code. The agent launches it with npx, opens the printed URL in a browser, and keeps it running so you can watch edits and give feedback while the video is being made.

Then ask your AI: use the remotion-studio skill

Details

Instructions available. Your AI can read the instructions. Execution depends on the setup they require.

Have a Remotion video project that can run.

What your AI can do with it

  • Start Remotion Studio with npx remotion studio
  • Open the printed Studio URL in a browser
  • Keep Studio running so edits appear live
  • Control logging with --log=error, warn, info, or verbose
  • Request a server port with --port=<number>
  • Start a second instance with --force-new

Getting started

  1. Have a Remotion video project that can run.
  2. Run npx remotion studio to start Studio and open the preview.
  3. If you use an in-app browser, run npx remotion studio --no-open and open the exact printed URL.
  4. Verify that Studio loads, and once a composition exists, that its video preview loads.
  5. Keep Studio open while editing so changes can be watched and steered.

What this skill tells your AI

The instructions your AI receives, as published by remotion-dev/remotion in packages/codex-plugin/skills/remotion-studio/SKILL.md and read by Ahel’s review.

When creating or editing a video, start Studio and open its preview as soon as the project can run, before building the composition. Keep it open while you work so the user can see changes and steer.

In Cursor, run Studio without --no-open so the browser opens automatically:

npx remotion studio

In other agent clients, you can also let Studio open the browser automatically with the command above. If you have an in-app browser and intend to use it, run:

npx remotion studio --no-open

If the Studio is already opened, the URL will be printed and the command will exit. Otherwise, a long-running process will start, and the URL will be printed.

When using --no-open, open the exact printed URL in the in-app browser and verify that Studio loads. Once a composition exists, verify that its video preview loads. Do not use --no-open if you cannot open the URL in the in-app browser.

Useful flags

ArgumentPurpose
--log=<level>Set error, warn, info (default), or verbose logging.
--port=<number>Request a Studio server port; otherwise Remotion finds a free port.
--force-newStart another Studio instance even when one is already running for the same project and port.

Questions

What happens if Studio is already open?
The URL is printed and the command exits. Otherwise a long-running process starts and the URL is printed.
What do the flags do?
--log sets error, warn, info (default), or verbose logging. --port requests a server port. --force-new starts another instance even when one is already running for the same project and port.
When should I use --no-open?
Use it when you have an in-app browser and intend to open the printed URL there. Do not use it if you cannot open the URL in the in-app browser.
When should Studio be started?
As soon as the project can run, before building the composition, and kept open while you work so the user can see changes and steer.
